MSQE Students and Graduates

What will you do with your MS in Quantitative Economics?

The value of a UConn MSQE degree is best measured by the impact our alumni make in the professional world. Our graduates don’t just understand economic theory; they master technical tools, such as Python, R, and advanced econometrics. From the high-stakes environment of Wall Street to the innovative labs of Silicon Valley and the strategic offices of global NGOs, the UConn MSQE community is a diverse network of leaders, analysts, and innovators. Explore the stories below to see how our STEM-designated curriculum translates into preparation for high-growth career opportunities across multiple industries.

Chris Daigel

Chris Daigle, Senior Data Scientist at The Hartford

“The training I received in the MSQE was invaluable to my abilities as a data scientist and quantitative professional. The program equipped me with the skills needed to address practical problems that businesses face. While attending, I developed strong personal and professional relationships with members of my cohort. The faculty are involved and invested in the students’ success both academically and in job placement.”

Hanli Chu

Hanli Chu, Data Scientist at Credit Ease

“Through the well-arranged courses in the program, I efficiently developed the data sense and analytic skills that I currently use every day in my career as a data scientist. Every professor was supportive and accommodating to me. I felt comfortable stopping into their offices whenever I needed academic help. I found the many academic seminars attended by graduate students, professors, and field experts critical in improving my understanding of industry trends. It trained me to pay attention to new developments, techniques, and information that is critical in the data field, as technology is always rapidly evolving.”

“The MSQE program prepared me with the technical skills that I use regularly: coding with Python, R, and Stata; working with machine learning models; prediction models; and convex optimization. The course in Writing and Communication significantly improved my resume, my networking skills, and well prepared me responding to the behavioral questions raised in the dozens of job market interviews I participated in.

The partnership of the MSQE program and the National Association of Business Economists (NABE) has been invaluable to me. I am a recipient of the 2020 NABE Scholars program for minority students and early-career economists. The Scholars programs assigns leaders in the industry as mentors, and creates numerous networking opportunities for the 2020 cohort at NABE conferences. I found the annual spring Policy Conference in Washing D.C. especially valuable for making connections and having discussions with representatives of top companies in the industry on pressing current issues such as the supply chain, crypto currency, and the future of transportation. From these experiences I realized how important networking is, as well as the importance of constant learning.”

Pia Del Carpio Headshot

Pia Del Carpio, Research Analyst

When Pia Del Carpio began her college journey at Norwalk Community College, she worked multiple jobs - waitressing, clerking, serving as a legal secretary, and cleaning houses - just to make ends meet. Determined to build a future in economics, she transferred to UConn, where she earned a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Business Fundamentals and a 3.81 GPA, landing on the Dean’s List multiple semesters. But Pia wasn’t done. She enrolled in UConn’s Master of Science in Quantitative Economics (MSQE) program at the Stamford campus through the accelerated 4+1 track, completing her graduate degree in May 2025 with a near-perfect 3.97 GPA.

That investment paid off immediately. Shortly after graduation, Pia was hired as a Research Analyst at the Managed Funds Association, located in the heart of Manhattan’s Midtown financial district. In this role she applies the rigorous data analysis, econometric modeling, and programming skills she developed in the MSQE—proof that the degree doesn’t just add a credential, it vaults graduates several steps up the career ladder.

Pia’s story is exactly what the MSQE was designed to create. Offered at both UConn’s Storrs and Stamford campuses, with small class sizes, nationally recognized faculty, and a GRE-optional admissions process, the program equips students with the quantitative edge today’s employers demand. Whether you’re a current UConn undergraduate eyeing the 4+1 fast track or a working professional ready for a career leap, the MSQE can take you where you want to go.
